Seven Things I've Learned from Dr. John Townsend

By Heidi Sadecky, MA,PCC – Executive Coach & Director, Townsend Leadership Program

One trait that many executive leaders share is the desire to improve leadership skills and inspire our teams to succeed. I've continuously sought ways to improve my leadership skills throughout my life. One person who has been a valuable mentor and taught me many lessons in leadership is Dr. John Townsend, a renowned clinical psychologist, best-selling author, founder of the Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling at Concordia University.

I first became a student of the Townsend Institute in 2015, have attended five Townsend Leadership Programs and this fall will launch my 14th both in-person and hybrid TLP programs. All of this became possible when I began learning. These leadership principles have become a part of my DNA. It's a joy to help others tap into their own leadership potential and influence others to do the same.

Here are some key lessons that I've learned from John Townsend:

  1. Focus on developing healthy relationships

Dr. Townsend believes that healthy relationships are the foundation of successful leadership. Leaders should prioritize building positive relationships with their team members and stakeholders. This includes being present, listening actively, and showing empathy and understanding.

  2. Encourage growth and development

Leaders should encourage their team members to grow and develop personally and professionally. This means providing opportunities for learning and development, as well as offering feedback and coaching to help team members improve.

  3. Embrace accountability

Dr. Townsend stresses the importance of accountability in leadership. Leaders should take responsibility for their actions and decisions, and they should hold themselves and their team members accountable for meeting goals and objectives.

  4. Practice self-care

Leadership can be stressful, and it's vital for leaders to take care of themselves so they can show up fully for their teams. Dr. Townsend recommends practicing self-care, such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and setting boundaries to prevent burnout.

  5. Foster a culture of trust

Leaders should work to create a culture of trust within their organization. This means being transparent and honest, communicating openly, and following through on commitments.

  6. Embrace change

Dr. Townsend recognizes that change is inevitable in today's fast-paced business environment. Leaders should embrace change and be willing to adapt and pivot when necessary.

  7. Lead with purpose

Finally, Dr. Townsend encourages leaders to lead with purpose. This means setting clear goals and objectives that align with the organization's mission and values, and inspiring team members to work towards a common goal.

These practical insights into leadership offer valuable lessons for all leaders. By focusing on healthy relationships, growth and development, accountability, self-care, trust, change, and purpose-driven leadership, we can become more effective leaders and humans.
