Case Study · Life’sWork of Western PA · Nonprofit
Steadier Leaders, Healthier Teams, Five Years and Counting
Life’sWork of Western PA helps people with disabilities and others who face barriers to employment build independent, working lives. Growing fast, the organization came to Heidi with conflict and strained morale and a clear goal: a healthier, more cohesive workplace.
The Organization
Through job training, life-skills coaching, and connections to employers and community, Life’sWork moves the people it serves toward independence and self-sufficiency. It reaches more than 1,500 individuals and families a year, funded through public dollars, business revenue, grants, and donations. Recent milestones include a new vocational training center, expansion into another county, a major government contract, and increased staffing.
The Challenge
Rapid growth brought growing pains. Life’sWork was expanding into new territory, taking on more demand, overhauling systems, and hiring quickly, all at the same time. The human cost showed: resistance to change, communication breakdowns, conflict between teams, strong personalities pulling in different directions, and morale taking a hit. The strain made it harder for managers to keep the team healthy, and it started to affect people’s well-being. What Life’sWork wanted was clear: stronger communication and leadership, and a workplace that felt cohesive again.
The Approach
Heidi led Life’sWork’s people through the Townsend Leadership Program, working on the skills the moment called for: handling conflict instead of letting it fester, communicating across teams that had stopped hearing each other, motivating people running on empty, and setting boundaries, which matters more than it sounds for a mission-driven staff inclined to give past their limits. Small-group sessions and individual coaching turned all of it into habits people could use the next day.
The Outcome
Participants came away able to handle hard conversations productively and to set and hold professional boundaries. That emotional-intelligence focus improved how teams worked together and made leaders more effective, showing up in promotions and stronger voices across the organization. The clearest proof is loyalty: Life’sWork has reinvested in the program for five consecutive years.
The program behind this story is the Townsend Leadership Program, and Life’sWork is just the kind of mission-driven organization Heidi works with often. If you lead a nonprofit and are wrestling with the same kind of pain points, there’s a good chance Heidi’s leadership work for nonprofits and ministries is exactly what you need. A discovery call is the place to start.
